Ornithologists sometimes put brightly coloured rings on birds in order to distinguish between individuals in a particular population, so that their behaviour can be studied more easily. In case of larger birds such gulls or waders, coloured dyes are often used, while large raptors are sometimes marked using plastic wing-tags. In recent years larger birds such eagles, storks and cranes have also been “radio-tagged”, giving us invaluable data on their movements and migrations.
