Cuckoos are summer visitors to Europe from tropical Africa. They arrive between mid-April and early May, when you can hear their well-known 'cuckoo' call in most parts of the countryside. In Cyprus some cuckoos may be seen as they migrate through the island to Europe. They do not breed here and it is not likely that they would be heard calling here.
Adult Cuckoos are amongst the earliest of the summer visitors to leave Europe. They have no need to help rear their young, so they are free to go. Most leave Europe during July. Young Cuckoos leave about one month later, when they are fully fledged. They never see their parents.
We do not know much about the route that the Cuckoo takes on migration. They probably travel down through central Europe to the south of Italy, where they feed before crossing to Europe. In Africa, Cuckoos never call, so most probably go unnoticed.
