Ptice selice, čak i one koje su nekada bile veoma česte, svakim danom postaju sve rjeđe. Zbog klimatskih promjena temperature tokom zime su više, i proljeće stiže ranije.

Ptice selice, čak i one koje su nekada bile veoma česte, svakim danom postaju sve rjeđe. Zbog klimatskih promjena temperature tokom zime su više, i proljeće stiže ranije. Dok selice iz Afrike stignu u Evropu, na mjesta na kojima se gnijezde, mlado lišće i gusjenice kojima se hrane mogu već nestati, pa je pticama  teško da nađu dovoljno hrane za sebe i svoje mlade u gnijezdu. Klimatske promjene uzrokuju i jake suše u Africi, pa tako pustinjska područja preko kojih ptice moraju preletjeti postaju sve veća.
Veliki broj ptica selica vezane su za poljoprivredna područja. U posljednjih 50-ak godina došlo je do povećane primjene različitih hemikalija u poljoprivrednoj proizvodnji i uništavanja insekata i korova kojima se ptice hrane. Sve je manje neobrađenih mjesta na kojima ptice mogu naći insekte i sjemenke, a sve je manje i živih ograda, starih stabala i starih kuća na kojima mogu praviti gnijezda.

Naši gradovi postaju sve veći, a istovremeno se smanjuje broj mjesta na kojima se ptice mogu hraniti i odmarati. Visoke zgrade, ceste, željezničke pruge, dalekovodi i vjetroturbine, bez kojih je teško zamisliti život danas, mogu biti prepreke za ptice, a kada se izgrade na pogrešnim mjestima, mogu biti uzrok smrti hiljada ptica svake godine.
Krivolovci godišnje ubiju oko pola milijarde ptica koje se umorne vraćaju iz Afrike preko Sredozemnog mora. Mnoge od ovih ptica pripadaju vrstama koje su već postale rijetke. Ovakvim lovom krši se zakon i  međunarodni sporazumi za zaštitu ptica selica, ali ljudi koji to rade često misle da imaju pravo na lov i ubijanje ptica.
